Volunteering with Voz

  • Create events to raise funds.
  • Make personal visits to donors, look for possible donors, participate in phone banks, send thank-you notes, send VOZ updates to donors respecting the work we are doing.
  • Organize house parties.
  • Ask for money from each foundation.

Grant Writing:

  • Look for possible ideas and/or foundations on the Internet that would complement our goals, speak to representatives of the foundations by phone and explain to them our work. Write Agreement Proposals for each foundation.
  • Write reports, letters, and do the follow-up work.
  • Be familiar with VOZ’s work.
  • Attend training workshops about grant writing.
  • Photocopy newspaper or magazine articles and file them.
  • Make and send copies.
  • Pay attention to deadlines.

ESL Classes:

  • Teach English classes from 11a.m. until 1p.m. M-F; Tuesday - Thursday at 7:00 until 9:00 p.m.
  • Attend meetings organized by VOZ or workshops featuring methods of teaching English classes.
  • Recruit new students on the corner for the classes.
  • Develop class lesson plans.
  • All levels of teaching experience welcome!

Computer Classes:

  • Teach level-appropriate computer classes.
  • Prepare lesson plans for the class.
  • Recruit new students.
  • Help to design a flier for the class.
  • Be available Mondays, 5:30 until 8:30 p.m.

Soccer:

  • Make phone calls to the players apprizing them of training times and games.
  • Attend practices, training sessions, and games.
  • Coordinate meetings with other teams.
  • Look for more teams with whom the VOZ team can play, referees, fields, etc.
  • Make ready uniforms, water, drinks, and medicine.
  • Make fliers.
  • Help to distribute fliers.
  • Help to coordinate the food if necessary.

Cultural Events:cultural evening.JPG

  • Assist in the coordination.
  • Look for a sound system.
  • Look for participants.
  • Help to map out the event and arrange for activities after each event.
  • Buy snacks for each event.
  • Ask the city or neighbors (if necessary) for permission.
  • Make and distribute fliers.
  • Contact the press to attend the events.

Cleaning:

  • Prepare brooms, dustpans, garbage bags, etc.
  • Help with corner clean-up.
  • Throw out the garbage.
  • Encourage others to participate in the clean-up campaigns.

Wage Claims:

  • Collect information from the employer and investigate if it is necessary.
  • Accompany the day laborer and speak with the employer.
  • Call the employer and ask him/her why they have not paid, or secure a time and place for them to pay the day laborer.
  • Write and send letters to employers about wage losses.
  • Fill out the VOZ and BOLI forms.
  • Go with the day laborer to Court, if necessary.
  • See the case through to its end.
  • Teach the day laborer how to use the booklet.

Help with El Journalero Newspaper:

  • This includes lay-out of newspaper
  • Scanning and selecting photos
  • Collecting (or writing !) articles
  • May include translating articles into English, if possible. This could be done on evenings and weekends, or during the day

Office Help:

  • Photocopying
  • Data entry
  • Organizational tasks

Special Events:

  • Help plan our special events, which take hours of prior planning
  • Help plan our monthly workshops, which involve plenty of planning
  • Specific tasks can be arranged during business hours or on the weekends
